If you were a parent, grandparent, or small child during the past forty years, Sesame Street was probably a large part of your routine. Intentionally or sub-consciously, we all sang along, played along, learned along. Sesame Street was a constantly changing show. New faces, new Muppets, new themes - but one segment was guaranteed. At some point, someone would come forward and say "Today’s show is brought to you by the Letter ____." Bert and Ernie would sing a song about the letter, or it would rise, gigantic, out of a pool filled with children. Happiness

Happiness has many definitions. Happiness is one of the "Big Six" emotions, according to many theorists (also: surprise, fear, disgust, anger, and sadness.) To the hedonists, happiness is simply the maximization of positive sensory input. Yet, according to cognitive therapists like Arnold A. Lazarus, happiness results from "making reasonable progress towards the realization of a goal." Happiness is thought to be physically caused by high concentrations of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the brain, also attributed to waves of euphoria. Recent studies show that one’s coping mechanisms can increase a person’s happiness level, as can feelings of pride and self-efficacy.

HOW?

Dan Baker, Ph. D., author of What Happy People Know, insists that a major key to happiness is gratitude! This automatically sets the mind on a positive path, ready to acknowledge, receive, and attract wonderful things. Bring happiness to your life by focusing on gratitude.

Keep a gratitude journal. Write down at least five things you are grateful for each day. Repeats are OK, and they don’t have to be grand in scale. "I’m grateful bananas were on sale today" is perfectly acceptable.

Begin the day with thanks. As you rush about your morning routine, repeat a thankful mantra as simple as "Thanks." You will be surprised at how many things come to mind to be grateful for that you hadn’t thought about before.

Remind yourself frequently. Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe, recommends keeping a gratitude rock in your pocket. Writing yourself notes and/or setting an alarm also works well.

Hope

Although hope was considered a major emotion during Medieval times, the scientific age does not consider it to be so. It does, however, fit the five features of emotion determined by social constructivist James Averill: they are difficult to control, affect the way you think or perceive life events, affect behavior, increase persistence even in the face of adversity, and are common universal experiences. Hope is often deeply connected to one’s moral values and appears most in situations where the outcome is uncertain. In fact, Norman Cousins’ book The Biology of Hope speaks to the power of positive emotions in the healing process. Similarly, C.R. Snyder of the University of Kansas found that hopeful students had higher levels of academic success, even after a severe setback.

Do the words that you say to yourself, or to another person really matter? The words you speak and the things you say do have a huge impact not only on yourself, but others as well. Yes, what you say really does matter!

Have you ever spoken unkindly to someone? Did the words greatly affect that person? Words are indeed powerful; and when they are used carelessly to hurt someone, they can be destructive for that person.

Children are especially vulnerable to the words we speak to them. Many of us continue to use unkind and often insensitive words as a disciplinary measure to our children. As a result , many of them will grow up with low self-esteem, painfully shy, or feel they are not worth anything at all.

You may, at some time or another, called someone you know an idiot or stupid. While you may apologize once you realize your mistake, the word has already been spoken and gone out into the universe. You can’t take it back. The person on the receiving end of the insult may take it to heart, and that one simple word can change them forever.

Have you ever called yourself stupid, dumb, idiot? Have you berated yourself in front of the mirror because you feel fat? Do you realize every word you say is being processed by your subconscious and, in some cases, embeds itself there? Thus, it begins to seep into your conscious self and the feelings of self-worth begin to dissipate.

What you say ultimately translates into eventual belief. If you utter to yourself, "I am not a very good baseball player," you will never succeed in that sport. You are setting up a self-defeatist attitude even before you begin. When you begin a thought or a sentence with a negative word, your expectations can never be realized.

We live in a world where words are used to attack, cajole, belittle, disengage, provoke, and irritate. We not only hurt ourselves, we hurt others as well. Anger, frustration, and disappointment contribute to the misuse of words, and they are usually used without thinking about the consequences. Even though the aftermath of using unkind words are often realized, we still do it.

It is important to realize the affect words have on us. Whether we mean to say them or not, said often enough they can transform the very nature of who we are. We should try to use only those words which embrace the true essence of who we are and words that nurture and help us grow into positive, self confident person we were meant to be. We can begin a thought or sentence with a positive word, we can be certain that our expectations will be realized and our experience of life will also be positive.

The next time you speak, think about the words you are about to impart. Choose them wisely when speaking to your peers, and cautiously when speaking to children. Understand that one word can positively or negatively affect someone’s life; even your own.
